At The Remedy, we’ve always believed that what you choose to buy, and who you choose to buy it from, matters. Small-batch brands and independent makers are at the heart of our shelves. They’re the people handcrafting products with intention, integrity, and a deep respect for the planet.
Small-batch makers don’t produce for mass consumption. They take time. They test. They choose ingredients and materials that work in harmony with your body and with the environment. Their formulations are thoughtful, not rushed. Their packaging is often reusable or recyclable. And their business decisions are rooted in values, not just profit. When you buy small, you’re buying more than a product. You’re buying someone’s creativity, their expertise, and their care. You’re investing in a process that is transparent, human, kind, and honest.
Mary Portas and the Power of Independents
At The Remedy we LOVE Mary Portas. She has been a strong advocate for independents and intentional businesses for some time now, urging us to recognise their importance in our communities. She often speaks about shopping with purpose, putting our money into businesses that bring heart, soul, and community connection into our lives. That’s exactly why The Remedy exists - to give you the choice to support the brands who care.
Why Amazon Will Never Be The Remedy
When we think back to lockdown, I can’t help but remember how many independent businesses closed their doors for good, while Amazon reported record profits. Quite frankly, it makes our blood boil. Lockdown welcomed a slower pace of life, enjoying more of nature, embracing the simple things, but in sad contrast and consequence, many small businesses were forgotten, or couldn't financially sustain the marketing efforts "needed" to keep up with the likes of Amazon.
There’s a human need for connection, that's a fact. The need to walk into a shop, speak to someone who knows your name, discover a product that has a story, and feel part of a community. Independent shopping isn’t about convenience at all costs. It’s about relationships, shared values, and being part of something bigger than individual ambition. Or at the very least, finding a balance of brands, systems, businesses that collectively meet your needs of price, service, human-focused, connection, convenience and quality.
Community, Transparency and Optimism
We can’t consume our way to a sustainable future, but we can choose to consume better. That’s why we only stock independent brands at our little shop here in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. Every single one of them cares about community, about the planet, and about the people they work with.
People. Planet. Profit. In that order. At The Remedy, we are aware. We are conscious. We are committed to transparency, diversity, and integrity. We believe in optimism and giving back to the community. We believe that when you follow what’s right, it gains traction. Being aware is still progress. And we're here to help you navigate the noise, the jargon, the education and to help you understand more about what factors to consider when it comes to conscious product buying decisions based on your objectives and priorities.
Why It Matters
Buying from small-batch brands is an act of care for yourself, for the makers, and for the planet. It’s not about chasing the cheapest or the fastest option, but about valuing the journey, the people, and the intention behind every product. And when it comes to money, a lot of the time it's better value. With high quality products often less is more, meaning it lasts longer, and there's much more value in life then taking care of yourself, your community and your planet in the process.
And in the end, that’s why we do what we do at The Remedy. Because we believe in it. And we believe you do too.
