How did NINI come about and was there a personal skin journey that influenced your products?
NINI really came from a very personal place. I’ve always loved the beauty industry, but it became something much deeper for me when I went through quite a traumatic time with acne at 15 or 16. Skincare became a way for me to feel grounded and connected again during that period. Later on, around 2013, I discovered truly natural and organic beauty, and I couldn’t go back. I couldn’t unsee or unlearn what I’d found, it just felt right on every level. That led me to study natural and organic formulation, and from there, NINI was born.
What does “sustainable skincare” mean to you?
Sustainable skincare, to me, goes far beyond just eco-consciousness or living a more meaningful life. It’s a standard you hold yourself to in everyday decisions. It’s that feeling of guilt when convenience takes over and you grab lunch in plastic packaging, or pick up vegetables wrapped in plastic. But equally, it’s the wholesome, grounding feeling you get when you shop locally, support farmers markets, and choose unpackaged fruit and veg. When it comes to beauty, sustainability starts with the formula. For me, ensuring products are completely free from synthetic polymers and microplastics is essential. That’s where it really matters. When you know your skincare is not only supporting your skin but also not harming the environment, there’s a real sense of alignment and care in that.
How do you research and decide which ingredients make it into your formulas?
It always starts with a feeling, an emotional pull towards a moment I want to create or bring into a ritual. I get inspired by the most unexpected things. For example, Siempre Viva, our retinoid alternative, was completely inspired by the film Death Becomes Her. The idea of the fountain of youth, those impossible standards, the magic of it all. That scene where Isabella Rossellini gives Meryl Streep the potion really stayed with me. I could almost feel the formula forming in my mind. Then, later on at an ingredients trade show, I came across a clinically proven microalgae active called retinART. It delivers the same kind of beautiful results you’d expect from traditional, synthetically produced vitamin A, but without the downtime or contradictions. That’s when everything clicked. So for me, formulas come together very intuitively. I follow that initial feeling, and then I find the ingredients that can bring it to life in the most effective and aligned way. My next concept, for example, was inspired by the idea of a green juice for your skin.
Are there any ingredients you intentionally avoid? Why?
Oh absolutely. Even though NINI is much more about what we choose to put into our formulas, there is one real offender for me that we’ve been very vocal about since the beginning, and that’s synthetic polymers, also known as microplastics. To me, they’re an illusion for the skin. They can make a product feel silky or smooth, but they’re not truly supporting skin health, and they don’t align with caring for the environment either. It just doesn’t sit right. I do understand that in categories like makeup and SPF they can be harder to avoid, but even then, I see it as a bit of a shortcut. The brands that rely on them, even if I love other aspects of what they do, are often just not pushing formulation far enough. If you really commit to the process, it is possible to create beautiful, high-performing products without synthetic polymers.
What’s one ingredient you think people misunderstand?
I think retinoids are one of the most misunderstood ingredients in skincare. There’s a lot of hype around them, and people know they’re “good,” but often don’t fully understand how to use them or what they’re actually doing. Retinoid is really an umbrella term for different derivatives of vitamin A, with the gold standard being tretinoin, which is only available by prescription. To keep it simple, most retinoids need to convert into retinoic acid in the skin to become active, and it’s that conversion process that can lead to irritation, redness, and flaking. What many people don’t realise is the potential of next-generation retinoid alternatives. With Siempre Viva, we use a clinically proven microalgae active called retinART. It delivers the same skin benefits you’d expect from vitamin A, but without the irritation or complications that can come with traditional retinoids.
How do you balance effectiveness with gentleness for younger teenage skin vs. experienced skin?
For younger teens, it’s all about nourishment, lightness, and freshness. The focus should be on helping the skin find balance, keeping it hydrated, and supporting clarity without overwhelming it. From NINI, that would be our Detox range, Oatopia Cleanser, and Rain Mist. It’s a simple, gentle ritual that allows the skin to function as it should. For more experienced skin, it becomes about deeper hydration and nourishment, really feeding that inner glow. We often hear from customers that they end up wearing little to no makeup because their skin looks so healthy. That’s where our more treatment-focused products come in, like Crimson Beauty, JuiCy, Siempre Viva, Moonlight Nectar, and Gaia Face Cream. These formulas are pure skin food. They not only support the barrier with essential lipids and ceramides but also help energise the skin for that deeper, more radiant glow.
Where do you think the beauty industry still falls short in sustainability?
To be honest, it’s so nuanced. Education is key, but it also needs to have an emotional pull for the consumer, otherwise people won’t actually change their behaviour. As a brand, we try to do what we can in a really considered way. We produce in small batches, use glass packaging that’s refillable, avoid buying unnecessary ingredients that could go to waste, and we don’t overproduce just to end up in TK MAXX. We approach it consciously both personally and professionally. Where the industry still falls short is largely at scale. Conventional brands owned by large conglomerates simply can’t operate in a truly sustainable way at that level. The reality is, the most sustainable option would be not creating anything physical at all and living entirely in harmony with nature. But we live in a capitalist world, and that’s not realistic for most people. So for me, it comes down to a mindset shift. Choose well, choose wisely, and choose less, not more.
What are the biggest skincare mistakes you see teenagers making?
I think one of the biggest mistakes is that teens aren’t really investing in their skin, they’re often buying cheaper products that can end up damaging their barrier. And even when they are using highly synthetic formulas that don’t necessarily harm the barrier, they’re not actually nourishing the skin with real “skin food,” so the skin isn’t being supported long term. Another big one is switching products too quickly. Skin needs time to respond and settle, but there’s this constant cycle of trying something new, so they never really allow their skin to “fall in love” with a routine. I also think it’s quite hard for teens to connect with natural and organic skincare, as it’s not always seen as “cool” in the social media space, where skincare has become a bit of a status trend rather than something rooted in true skin health.
If you had to pick your favourite NINI product what would it be and why?
This is such a hard one, as every formula I’ve created comes from my own life experiences and inspirations. At NINI, everything is developed from scratch, we don’t white label like many brands do, so each product feels very personal to me. But if I had to choose, it would have to be Detox Oil. It’s an absolute staple in my rituals and a formula that consistently makes both me and my skin feel so happy and balanced. I truly believe it’s one of those products everyone should own.
What are the top 3 hero products from NINI that people just can't get enough of? And why do you think that is?
Another tricky one, as it really depends on the category. Some people can’t live without Oatopia Cleanser or Rain Face Mist, and Infinity Beauty Balm has once again become a staple for so many. But if I had to choose the three products people come back to time and time again, it would be Detox Oil, Crimson Beauty, which regularly sells out, and Gaia Face Cream. All three consistently deliver real, visible results, and it’s that combination of results and ritual that keeps people coming back for more.
What’s something customers would be surprised to learn about your brand?
I think people would be surprised by just how much we truly care. We really obsess over every detail at NINI and invest heavily into our formulas to make sure they deliver exactly what our customers deserve. I also think many would be shocked to know how we started. NINI began at markets with very little investment, and everything has grown organically from there. Sometimes people assume we’re a much bigger brand than we are, but in reality, it’s just myself, my sister, and a little bit of fairy dust keeping everything moving.
What does your own daily skincare routine look like?
Oh, how long have you got! I’m definitely a maximalist when it comes to my rituals. I mask daily without exception, it’s fundamental for that ultimate skin glow. I use our Violet Mask and Natura Miracle Mask (which I actually discontinued but am bringing back, as there’s truly nothing like it). In the morning, I’ll start with Rain Mist as a gentle cleanse, or one of our cleansers depending on what my skin needs. I always follow with Detox Oil mixed with Crimson Beauty, without fail, it’s my holy grail. Then I use JuiCy to really flood the skin with antioxidants, followed by Gaia Face Cream, and finish with Infinity Balm to lock everything in. I’ll also mist Rosé throughout the day. In the evening, I keep things quite similar, but swap JuiCy for Siempre Viva, our retinoid alternative serum. I then just use Infinity Balm to seal everything in, without Gaia underneath. My skin absolutely thrives on this ritual.
What’s a skincare myth you wish would disappear?
Wearing SPF every single day in the UK, even on grey, rainy days. I know that’s a controversial one, but I do think people can sometimes overdo it with both chemical and mineral filters when they may not actually need that level of protection. I always say, be sun smart, not sun scared. The sun is powerful, of course, but it’s also life-giving and healing. It’s about respecting it, understanding your exposure, and using protection when it’s truly needed, rather than applying it out of fear.
What advice would you give your younger self about skincare?
Honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. If anything, I’d just say discover natural beauty a little sooner. When I had acne and my mum took me into that health store, I’d tell myself to really take it seriously. That strange feeling I had in there wasn’t random, it was a calling, I just didn’t realise it at the time. But overall, I look back on my early experiences with beauty so fondly. I have such special memories of those moments, and they’ve all shaped what NINI is today.
What's next for NINI?
Just like a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly, we’re always evolving and working on something beautiful behind the scenes. We have some really exciting launches coming, including a new overnight treatment, a detox gel serum, a Crimson Beauty cleanser, and a reformulated product that I can’t wait to share. We’re also focusing on creating a pop-up experience and I’ll be returning to my holistic skin food facials, which feels really special. I’m genuinely so excited for what’s coming next in the NINI universe. Buckle up is all I’ll say…
