Our guide to choosing an SPF

Our guide to choosing an SPF

Sunshine is officially here, and with it, a gentle reminder that SPF isn’t just for beach days. Daily sun protection is one of the simplest and most effective ways to care for your skin year-round. But not all SPFs are made the same, so here’s your no-nonsense guide to the different types and what to look for, especially if you love our planet as much as we do and want to make more eco-friendly choices…

Mineral vs. Chemical SPF – What’s the Difference?

There are two main types of SPF, but what are their key differences?

Mineral SPF

Uses natural minerals like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide

Sits on the surface of your skin to reflect UV rays

Ideal for sensitive skin and young children

Starts working immediately

Sometimes thicker in texture

Can cause white case to the skin

Chemical SPF

Uses filters that absorb UV rays and turn them into heat

Often found in makeup

Needs 15–20 minutes to activate

May cause irritation on sensitive skin

Some filters are linked to environmental concerns

Tends to be lighter in texture, and therefore more comfortable for everyday wear and for under make-up.

Better for UVA protection (UVA rays have more energy and penetrate deeper into the skin)

UVA & UVB – The Dynamic Duo You Need Protection From

When shopping for your SPF, always look for a broad-spectrum SPF, which protects against both UVA and AVB. Your skin will thank you later.

UVA are the ageing rays (they penetrate deeper, causing fine lines and pigmentation).

UVB are the burning rays (they’re the main culprits behind sunburn).

An easy to way remember this is A is for ageing and B is for burning!
