Why young skin needs kindness, not complicated routines

Why young skin needs kindness, not complicated routines

At The Remedy our ethos is simple. Less can often be more. Healthy skin is more important than perfect skin. Skincare should feel empowering.

We believe in building gentle yet effective habits by choosing products that are kind to both skin and planet.

In a world of beauty trends, ‘GRWM’, and overconsumption, we are pleased to have launched a new facial treatment designed for younger skins. Read on to find out more, and remember, our team are here to help you / your children on their skincare journey, The Remedy way…

Why are we talking about tween and teenage skincare?

We have launched a new ‘Express younger skin facial’ at The Remedy Room. Designed for skins aged 12-16, this treatment features a gentle cleanse, a hydrating and nourishing facial mask, a refreshing spritz, and a relaxing facial massage, enhancing relaxation and glowing skin. This moment of tranquility takes place in our lounge area where you can also bring along a grown up or friend and enjoy a session together.

More young people are becoming interested in skincare than ever before. While adopting good skincare habits from a younger age isn’t a bad thing, social media means 12-year-olds are being exposed to routines designed for adults. They’re exposed to expensive products, active ingredients, unrealistic aspirations. Skincare shouldn't be about perfection. It should be about caring for your skin gently and learning healthy habits for life.

Young skin doesn't need lots of products

Tween skin is often naturally resilient and healthy, and more products don't necessarily equal better skin. The overuse of strong ingredients can disrupt the skin barrier and lead to dryness, sensitivity, breakouts, and confusion about what is actually working…

As far as we’re concerned, less is more when it comes to any skincare regime, regardless of age, and products containing retinoids and strong acids are not necessary for young skin. The goal is healthy, comfortable skin."

Working with your skin, not against it

Skin changes during puberty are completely normal. Hormonal changes can lead to oiliness, congestion and occasional breakouts, and we want to reassure young people that skin doesn’t require a ‘fix’, and that it’s completely normal to adjust the products you use - whether that’s seasonally, or as your skin matures. Learning to listen to your skin rather than fighting it is a much healthier, sustainable approach.

The pressure of social media and overconsumption

The rise of “skinfluencers”, the “GRWM” videos, and trend-led skincare can all create intense pressure to own lots of products. Not only is this unnecessary expense, but it creates an unhealthy message of telling young people they need more. Do we really need twelve products? Is every trend suitable for every age? How does this affect skin affect confidence?

Why starting with simple habits matters most

What would we suggest a healthy habit looks like when introducing skincare for young people?  A simple routine might include a gentle cleanser and moisturiser/SPF in the warmer months. That’s it, and that’s more than enough.

But habits go beyond skincare. Drinking enough water, sleeping well, managing stress, not picking spots, washing makeup brushes (and using good quality or natural makeup) and changing our pillowcases regularly are lifelong habits rather than quick fixes, that really can help with skin health from a young age.

Choosing kinder products matters too

Beauty doesn't need to cost the earth. Choosing products that are gentle on the skin, sustainably made, cruelty-free, responsibly packaged, designed for long-term skin health rather than trends, can all help to introduce the idea of mindful consumption in all parts of life.

At The Remedy, we curate our shelves with brands that tick these boxes, and we have products suitable for all skin ages and skin types. Whether you book a facial treatment, or pop in to see us, our team can talk through some product suggestions and help review what you are already using at home.

Occasional facials can be beneficial

There are many benefits to having skin assessed by a professional, because we understand what your skin type is, and what it actually needs. We will help you to avoid wasting money on products that are unsuitable, we will give guidance on hormonal skin changes, and will help you build positive skin habits early.

Of course, there are some additional, and wonderful benefits from having a facial. Facials are known for being a relaxing experience, time away from noise, screens and social pressures, a dose of self-care, confidence building and also educational too. Think of it as a skincare ‘check in’, much like visiting a hairdresser for advise on your hair.

***

We are really passionate about teaching young people the importance of using skincare as self-care, not self correction, and to help those interested in skincare to approach their new regime with kindness, respect, and care. We’d love to help you and your tweens/teens introduce a skincare regime that reflects this.
